This Month in Film History – September 28, 1952: Dutch Actress Sylvia Kristel is Born

The 1970s were a weird time in cinema. Restrictions over content were cby loosened as fast as a new film could challenge what restrictions remained. Sex began to invade the screen like Communists metaphors in a 50 science-fiction film. Old Hollywood was being toppled. As a new style of film-making was taking over, a new breed of actor was needed. Into that atmosphere, stepped model turned actress Sylvia Kristel, who would find fame in the sexually explicit film Emmanuelle. It was in this month of September – September 28, 1952 – Sylvia Kristel was born.

France and Italy would lead the way into the softcore porn genre. France, especially active, would take the point. The aforementioned Emmanuelle film was a French production based on a novel by writer Emmanuelle Arsan. Given in was the 1970s, when cheap was in and sex in film was more in, Emmanuelle was a rousing success and Sylvia Kristel was somewhat of a star: her and fellow countryman Rutger Hauer putting Holland on the acting map. In all, Kristel would star in 7 Emmanuelle films, slowly jettisoning the high brow concept of a script, instead opting for all out sex instead.

Kristel would appear in other sexually charged films such as Women in Love, Mata Hari and Private Lessons. Though she was born in Holland, her English was never that fluent or understandable, unlike Rutger Hauer who numerous people assumed was American. Thus, once Kristel began to age, film offers became fewer and fewer, never mind the fact she wasn’t a good actress either.
